Harriers to host Street Mile, as City2City is cancelled

JOBURG – Randburg Harriers to host three runs after Central Gauteng Athletics is unable to raise the R2 million needed to host the City2City Ultra Marathon 2016.

The City2City Ultra Marathon 2016 has been cancelled due to a lack of funds, but local runners need not worry.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) spokesperson Mandla Radebe revealed that the highly-anticipated run from Melrose to Centurion on 4 September was cancelled due to CGA only raising approximately R1 million of the R2 million needed for the run.

However, runners will not miss out, as the Randburg Harriers will host three events on the day to compensate. “We received prior notice that the City2City would be cancelled, so we decided to organise three events on the day,” Randburg Harriers public relations officer, John Neal, said.

He explained that the running club will host a Street Mile run through the streets around the Randburg Sports Complex in Malanshof, as well as a 5km fun run and a 10km road race.

Neal said that more details about these events will follow in due course.

According to Radebe, the City2City Ultra Marathon should continue next year. “Things are looking good for next year as we already have some sponsors who are interested in showing support for the next race,” he said.
