Residents of Duiker Ridge clean up

RANDPARK RIDGE – The Duiker Ridge Resident's Association take it upon themselves to keep their neighbourhood free of litter.

The Duiker Ridge Neighbourhood Watch (DRNW) alongside the Duiker Ridge Resident’s association (DRRA) held a clean-up aimed at clearing out the overgrowth and thick bush in their area, which they say has been neglected by the City of Joburg. Committee member of the DRRA, Craig du Plessis said that by clearing out the thick vegetation, it becomes more difficult for potential intruders to hide or conduct unscrupulous affairs. “The park is only attended to by the City twice a year as they have indicated that they don’t have sufficient resources, so we have taken it upon ourselves to clean the area up,” he said.

He pointed out that they couldn’t sit back and wait for the City to do something.

“The Duiker Ridge Neighbourhood Watch was recently formed and as one of our first initiatives we want to create a community spirit that makes our residents feel united, proud and ultimately secure,” he added.

Du Plessis added that they were happy with the turnout of the residents who assisted in picking up litter, mowing the grass and cutting down alien plant species.

“The stars of the day were the children who jumped in and chose to get involved in cleaning up as opposed to spending their time behind a computer screen,” he quipped.

“Although there is still much we could have done, the team spirit and contributions by various residents have set the precedent of what we can accomplish moving forward,” he noted.

Du Plessis thanked all the volunteers for their help and added that there were others who could not be physically present but were able to contribute in other ways. “The DRNW and the DRRA would like to thank Lambsons Hire Honeydew for some of the machinery provided, Gauteng Protection  for their ongoing support towards our security,” he said.
