MUST READ: Pupil walks 5km to school with 11 litres of water to donate

SHARONLEA – The water crisis gets help from a little man.

Nkosinani Khawula, a Grade 2 pupil at Sharonlea Primary School, donated 11 litres of water to the Water Shortage South Africa project.

It was a typical day on 16 May, which started off with the little man’s early morning journey to school. Eight-year-old Nkosinani walks to school from his home near Golden Harvest Park every day. What made this journey different from the rest was the fact that Nkosinani carried a special donation.

He made his way to class and surprised his teacher with 11 litres of water. He had actually carried the water, by himself and in his backpack, all the way to school – a distance of 5km.

Marie Stroebel, a junior primary Afrikaans teacher at Sharonlea, started the water project. “We started the project about three weeks ago and slowly donations have come in,” said Stroebel.

“Nkosinani’s teacher called me into her class on Monday morning to show me the wonderful donation he had carried all the way from his home,” she said.
