Are you ready to vote?

JOBURG – Residents who are not sure of their voter registration details can visit their local IEC offices to check.

The Constitutional court reserved judgement in the matter pertaining to the issue of voters addresses but this has left many voters confused as to what will happen now.

Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl pointed out that the voters’ role had not yet officially closed for the 2016 Municipal Elections which is scheduled for 3 August. She added that all indications pointed to the registration roll closing as early as 20 May. “There are residents who are not sure if their addresses reflect on the registration roll however, we did see a good number of residents coming out on the two registration weekends,” she said.

Van Zijl added that residents who had yet to verify their details with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) could send an SMS with their ID number to 32810 and they would get an SMS reply telling them whether they needed to visit their nearest IEC offices to complete their registration details.

She said that voters still had time until registrations closed to either register, re-register or update their addresses.

Van Zijl explained that the nearest IEC offices for Ward 98 as well as wards 68,69,82,87,88 and 99 was at the, ACA Krans Building, 35 Symons Road, Auckland Park.

Spokesperson for the IEC, Kate Bapela, urged residents who were not sure about their status to visit their local IEC offices and to bring along their ID documents and they can verbally confirm their addresses. She however, warned residents against giving false addresses citing that it was a criminal offence.

“Registration at local IEC offices will end when the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Desmond van Rooyen decides to publish the election date in the Government Gazzette and at midnight on the day of publishing all voter registrations will close,” she explained.
