Blankets by the dozen

FERNDALE – Resident urges people to help knit squares and sew blankets in aid of the Randburg Trauma Centre.

A resident of Ferndale, Donna Sipman created a well-known blanket drive in the Ferndale area.

According to Sipman, she started the project in 2013 after she realised a need for blankets in her area and since then, with the help of residents, she has donated many blankets to the Randburg Trauma Centre. Sipman explained that people affected by violent crimes, homeless people or abandoned children and babies are taken to the trauma centre.

These people often need to stay at the trauma centre, while the police sort out their paper work and find a place for them to stay. “Many of them do not have a lot of clothes and sometimes the babies do not have any,” said Sipman. She added that the warmth of a blanket can make such a big difference, especially when victims of crime experience symptoms of shock. “People appreciate the kindness of a blanket very much as it is also a gift, which they can take home with them,” said Sipman.

Sipman explained that she has so many people who help her knit and donate squares each year. “One year, teachers of the Delta Park School knitted squares during break time,” said Sipman. Many pensioners as well as school pupils knit squares and donate them to Sipman.

Sipman asked the community to donate squares, but she also urged residents to help her to sew the squares together in order to form the blankets.
