Dance academy opens at Curro Aurora Performing Arts School

SUNDOWNER–The Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy welcomes the public to join their dance classes.

Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy (MGHHDA) launched a new branch at Curro Aurora Performing Arts School.

Founder, professional dancer and choreographer Mario Gomes said that he hosted an open day on 14 to 15 April for dancers, especially underprivileged dancers in the area. He gave away 10 scholarships to dancers at the academy for free. Mario also has a branch in the West Rand where he has also given away 40 scholarships so far.

“We had a good turn out of 167 dancers who attended the open day. My class is open to everyone and not only pupils from the school. I believe the talent in this area is awesome. I am excited at the amount of talent from different races and age groups. I believe it is better to teach dancers from a young age, so I can groom them into professional dancers in order to learn professional skills, time management and build confidence,” explained Gomes.

He said that dancers who want to join his class can learn contemporary dance that infuses all classical styles. There are lessons from Wednesday to Friday. Apart from his passion for dancing he is also passionate about empowering dancers from underprivileged backgrounds. So far he has employed ten of his dancers to be part of his academy.

“Some of my dancers have competed on an international level and won various awards in countries such as Italy, Denmark and Germany. My advice to dancers who would like to join my class is to understand the correct technique and standard of dances. Taking part in the class can also give them the opportunity to be part of dance crews, enter competitions and turn themselves into professional dancers,” said Gomes.
