Handling passion with a firm grip

SUNDOWNER – Curro Aurora rugby players have themselves a ball of time with some U21 Lions rugby players.

Curro Aurora Private School hosted a special rugby clinic for their players on 15 April. The school invited a few of the Lions U21 players to coach the budding youngsters.

The young players were overjoyed when they saw Cameron Rooi, Barend Smit, Ralton October, Curtis Jonas, McMillan Muller and Siyabonga Masuku arrive. They filled their day with tips on how to tackle, pass and handle the ball.

The school’s head coach Dewald Botha said that the clinic brought in more players than expected. “The day was great, our players were all here to get this great training, even those who don’t play rugby joined us.” said Botha. He continued that training the young players included all the basics. This would ready the boys for their next match in two weeks.

Botha, who has been a coach for the past eight years said that he loves this sport with a passion.

The field was filled with players eager to show off all they have managed to grasp from their coach. The difference that the U21 Lions players brought to the field was not going to go to waste.

Smit, who is a utility back for the Lions, said that this day was all too nostalgic for him. “This takes me back to when I was that young and all I wanted to do was play rugby,” said Smit. He went on to add that he hopes to encourage the youth to take up the sport he loves so much. “If I can, I would play this sport until I’m old,” said Smit.

He further explained that it is great to have such days where he gets to impart knowledge on the sport. He also expressed that all a great player needs is commitment.

Botha concluded that the progression he has seen in his players has been fantastic to see. He also shared in Smit’s sentiments of commitment. “If they all commit to something and keep at it then they will find success in all they do.”
