Check if you are registered

JOBURG –Remember to check that you are registered for local elections this weekend.

President Jacob Zuma announced that the local government elections will be held on 3 August, but millions of registered voters need to update their address detail this weekend if they want to vote.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said, “The announcement was especially welcome ahead of this weekend’s final registration…This was particularly important for students, migrant workers and others who may commute between two places of residence.”

This weekend, 9 and 10 April is the last chance for voters to register or clarify their details.

Many residents received SMS’s from the IEC this week stating that they are registered but that no address details were available for them. The IEC said on 7 April that they sent out about 5.3 million SMS’s to registered voters.

“The SMS messages inform these voters that no address is currently available for them in the Electoral Commission’s records and urges them to visit their voting station this weekend to update their address details,” said IEC.

According to the IEC there are about 6.92 million voters currently on the voters roll without any address details. This is down from approximately 8 million ahead of the March registration weekend. Of the 6.92 million voters, the IEC were only able to find cell phone numbers for 5.3 million.

“We urge all those who are eligible to vote, to register to vote and those who have not checked their names to do so on Saturday and Sunday this weekend so that together we continue to re-affirm and deepen our democracy,” said President Zuma.
