Cricket bat exchanged for pageant tiara

OLIVEDALE – 10-year-old Claudia Borland will participate in an international pageant in London and France.

To be a pageant star does not necessarily mean that one should be the stereotypical girly-girl. Claudia Borland (10) a Grade 4 pupil from Bryneven Primary School in Bryanston aims to break this stereotype.

Claudia will partake in the Face of the Globe international pageant from 2 to 9 April in London as well as Paris, France. Her mother, Belinda Borland explained that the pageant works on the same point system as other pageants. Claudia is currently busy participating in different side-line competitions. “If she is in the top 10 of these competitions, it gives her a better chance,” explained Belinda.

Only four South Africans will compete in this pageant and Claudia is the only one in the junior division. Belinda said that there is a stigma that it is bad to put your child in pageants, but according to Belinda this has been a confidence booster for her daughter. “They have to do charity work in order to participate in the pageant,” said Belinda.

This is not Claudia’s first pageant as she has participated before, and this is not her only hobby. Claudia does musical theatre, modelling, guitar lessons, vocal lessons and of course pageants, but this 10-year old also loves action and being a bit of a tomboy. She does swimming, netball, action netball and action cricket. Claudia is only one of two girls that is a part of the boy’s action cricket team at the Hillfox Action Sports Arena.

Claudia said that she loves to put on shorts rather than a dress. “I will keep on doing these activities till I am too tired to carry on,” said Claudia. She added that she is excited to participate in the pageant especially to walk on the ramp and meet new friends.
