UPDATE: SACAA and police to investigate plane crash

LANSERIA – Training flight turns to tragedy outside Lanseria International Airport.

Paramedics rushed to the scene of a plane crash approximately 8km from Lanseria International Airport just after 4.30pm on 7 March.

“It is reported by witnesses that the plane had taken off from the airport when it called in a Mayday,” said Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen.

On arrival, paramedics found that the two occupants of the plane, a man and a woman, had already succumbed to their injuries. They were declared dead on the scene and burnt beyond recognition.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown and it is still under investigation by the South Africa Civil Aviation Authority as well as the South African Police Services.

While waiting for the aviation authority, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya from Kagiso Police Station confirmed that the plane was a training plane that took off from from the airport. “The man in the plane was an instructor and the woman was a student,” said WO Sibiya. The police communicated with Lanseria International Airport to get information about who the victims were, and the families were notified and called to the scene.
