Girls rule at weekend’s Gauteng Championships

FONTAINEBLEAU – Five young stars make their coaches proud and are on their way to the upcoming SA Athletics Championships in Port Elizabeth.

Laerskool Fontainebleau takes a lot of pride in their athletes and 17 pupils from the school participated in the Gauteng Primary School Athletics Championships on 26 and 27 February at the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium.

The 17 athletes were included in the 108-athlete D10 team to compete at the championships. The D10 team won 10 gold medals, six silver medals and nine bronze medals at the championships. The athletes from Laerskool Fontainebleau contributed six gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Five athletes from the school qualified to participate in the upcoming SA championships on 11 and 12 March in Port Elizabeth. Simoné de Wet won first place in 200m track and 200m and 75m hurdles. Kayla la Grange won first place in 150m, 100m and the high jump event. Zonica Lindeque won second place in shot put.

Mignon la Grange won third place in shot put and Elaine Wijnbeek won third place in 70m hurdles. La Grange and De Wet also won gold medals as a part of the 4 x 100m relay team. De Wet was selected as the victrix ludorum of the championships. School administrator Mitzi van der Westhuizen from the school said that coaches and staff of Laerskool Fontainebleau are very proud of the athletes.
