Residents are fed up with mugging incidents

SHARONLEA – Police advised residents to report all incidents of muggings.

Residents from various complexes in Sharonlea are fed up with the incidents of mugging along the Malibongwe bridge between Suikerbossie Street and President Fouché Drive.

Most residents attended the Sector meeting with the Douglasdale Police on the evening of 18 February in an attempt to seek solutions to the ongoing problem.

The meeting was organised by one of the residents, Becky Smith, and they agreed to meet again on 21 February. It is then that they would seek a proper solution to the problem.

Douglasdale police Sector 1 manager Constable Bernicia Subroyan advised residents to report all the incidents.

It was established that victims did not report the incidents to the police. She advised residents to record the sector vehicles contact details on their phones as many complained that police were not helping or attending to their complaints.

“We are here to mobilise the community and ensure that residents are more involved in activities in their communities. We want them to work closely with the police,” she added.

A resident who preferred to be known only by her name, Wadzi, explained that she was mugged on the evening of 11 January at the same bridge but did not report the incident.

“They stabbed me during the incident,” she said.

It was also discussed that there could be a syndicate operating in the area as victims were usually mugged by two criminals. Police pleaded with residents to report all the incidents and to always look out for the description of the criminals.
