GALLERY: Eye-glasses donated to Golden Harvest residents

BROMHOF – Residents at Golden Harvest Retirement Villages received eye-glasses from Clicks Northgate and Readwell.

A leading reading glass brand in South Africa – Readwell, together with Clicks Northgate, have donated eye-glasses to residents at Golden Harvest Retirement Villages in Bromhof on 18 February.

The donation started at Golden Harvest I in the morning and ended at Golden Harvest II in the afternoon.

Westcor/Readwell area manager Clapton Maistry said this nationwide campaign is called ‘Buy One Give One’ and it is their initiative together with Clicks Group.

“It is something that we do every year. We donate the exact number of glasses sold by Clicks stores. If they sells 100 pairs of glasses, we donate 100 of them, the exact number,” said Maistry.

He explained that it is about taking social responsibility – not making huge profit or gaining publicity.

“We donate anywhere but only for the people who can’t afford,” he added.

Maistry said they were challenging other cooperates to do the same – give to the needy.

Clicks Northgate store manager Tulani Salityi said they were happy because they have helped someone.

“This is not about money or making profit, but doing the right thing,” he said.

Senior nurse at the Village II, Orah Sithole, said they accommodated 30 residents who all received the glasses.

Jessy Crewe-Brown (105) could not hold back her tears when she received the generous gift after Clicks Northgate and Readwell visited her room in the village.

“That is very kind of you. It makes me cry,” said Crewe-Brown, a former North Riding resident.

Former Durban school principal Hilda Slinder (83) who is also one of the beneficiaries, appreciated the gift as well.

“That is very nice,” she said.

Spies family members visited their loved one, Benny Spies (84), in the village.

They were there at the right time – the four members received one pair of glasses each.

Former athlete Rex Gazzard (64) said, “They see much better than the glasses I bought myself.”

The village is managed by Matron Nellie Hoffmann.
