Wings of Hope raises awareness for Cancer

OLIVEDALE – In support of World Cancer Day Wings of Hope sell items for their organisation and inform people about cancer.

Wings of Hope Cancer Support is raising awareness for World Cancer Day at the Netcare Olivedale Hospital. World Cancer Day is on 4 February, but members of the organisation started selling beautiful handmade jewellery, key rings and custom-made pens in order to raise funds for their organisation from even the day before. Items sold can be purchased by visitors, patients and the staff at affordable prices.

Wings of Hope Cancer Support member Jennifer Murdoch said that through their organisation they can inform people about cancer. “The funds we raise today go towards our oranganisation’s meetings. During the meetings we get the opportunity to offer our support, help and friendship to other cancer survivors,” said Murdoch.

She added that the Netcare Olivedale Hospital Oncology Unit are always helpful with their cause. The Oncology Unit will host an event on 12 February in connection with Valentines Day, where patients are welcome to come interact with each other. Members of Wings of Hope Cancer Support will also be there to participate in offering patients with support and making the day a success.

Founding member, director and chairperson of Wings of Hope Cancer Support Christel Kilma said the organisation hosted their first public meeting at the Netcare head office in Sandton last month. This year, Wings of Hope Cancer Support will travel to other Netcare hospitals around the country to raise awareness about cancer.

“Our first priority is to support patients by visiting them during their chemotherapy sessions and offering our time and encouragement. We are currently in partnership with NuMetro, which screens our advertisements about our organisation during their trailers. So far the NuMetro cinema at Emperors Palace and Hyde Park Corner screen our advertisements,” said Kilma.

She added that for World Cancer Day, the organisation continues to encourage both men and women to perform breast examinations on themselves and to consult their doctors if they experience any abnormalities in their bodies.
