Water leaks cause concern

RANDBURG – While some parts of the country is without water, three major water leaks in Randburg waste masses of water.

Three major water leaks on Bram Fischer Drive in Randburg have been reported.

The biggest leak on Bram Fischer Drive is yet to be repaired.

Jennifer Jones, a resident, says that she has taken up the problem with Johannesburg Water numerous times, but nothing is being done to fix the leaks. According to Jones, the biggest one has been leaking for about a month. “Johannesburg Water came and made a hole, but now it’s leaking once more.” The leak is on 119 Bram Fischer Drive and water is streaming out and running down the street.

Another leak, which is on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Hunter Street, has been leaking for a week. “Water is a precious resource and we cannot afford to waste water this way,” said Jones. She further said that there was a leak on the corner of Harley Street and Bram Fischer Drive, that had leaked for a month before being fixed. This leak has started leaking again, according to Jones. “Millions of litres of water were wasted here, because it was a major pipe burst,” said Jones.

Eleanor Mavimbela, external communications officer of Johannesburg Water, said that the depot is aware of the leaks. “Upon trying to do repairs, the workers discovered that the condition of the pipes had been deteriorated to such an extent that they could not be patched or repaired. They have to be replaced and we are presently in the process of engaging a contractor to do this work,” said Mavimbela.
