Drain cover still broken after three months

RANDPARK – Resident raises concerns over a storm water drain cement cover.

Residents in Randpark have expressed concern over a broken kerb inlet cover that has been left broken for several months.

A concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he suspects the kerb inlet cover was crushed when a truck parked over the cover and has since been left like that.

The storm water drain cement cover in Randpark has been in this state for several months.

“This poses a danger to residents because people walk past here every day and anything can happen,” he pointed out.

He lambasted the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for their slow response after the matter had been reported to them by Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl and added that the kerb inlet cover has remained in the same condition.

Spokesperson for JRA Bertha Peters-Scheepers thanked the residents for reporting the broken kerb inlet cover to the JRA. “We will log a service request and ensure the cover is replaced. It is unfortunate that city-wide we experience areas where the weight of trucks, either riding over or parking on these covers, causes extensive damage at a replacement cost to ratepayers,” she said.

Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl was unavailable for further comment at the time of publishing.
