Homeless assault man after robbery
LINDEN – Police have arrested a suspect after homeless people assaulted him after he committed robbery.
A group of homeless teens and adults came to the rescue of an armed robbery victim on 12 December.
Linden Police corporate communication officer Constable Carol Mulamu said that the victim was walking to her home in Windsor East, in the evening, when she was approached by an unknown man who pointed a firearm at her and demanded her handbag. “The suspect fled the scene on foot with the victim’s handbag which contained her cellphone, bank cards and cash,” Const Mulamu explained.
According to Const Mulamu, after the victim approached homeless people at Beatrice Avenue for help, they came to her rescue. The woman pointed out where the suspect had run off to and the 28-year-old suspect, was apprehended by the community who then demanded the victim’s handbag from him which he returned. Const Mulamu pointed out that the angry mob then assaulted the suspect a few times before they called the police.
“Police arrested the suspect for armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. He appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 December,” Const Mulamu confirmed. She explained that the case was postponed and police investigations are continuing.
Linden Police Commander, Colonel Balaraman Govindasamy applauded the homeless for the success. “The community need to work with the police in fighting crime.
