Local artists get Grammy nomination

JOBURG – South African musicians hit perfect notes for Grammy nominations.

Local flutist and music composer, Wouter Kellerman, received his second Grammy nomination for best contemporary instrumental album.

The talented musician won his first Grammy Award earlier this year for his album Winds of Samsara which he recorded with Indian composer Ricky Kej and was inspired by the lives of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. His latest album, Love Language debuted at number one on the Billboard World Music Chart. It also debuted at number one on the Billboard New Age Chart, keeping its momentum in the Top 10 for 12 weeks.

The Ferndale resident said in previous interviews that he had always known he wanted to be a musician but to support his family, he opted to study electronic engineering. Kellerman also encouraged South African artists to take their music to the world, as he thinks the calibre of music in our country is quite high.

Kellerman is not the only South African to be nominated for the prestigious award, choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who are not only veteran South African artists, but veteran Grammy nominees too. This will be the group’s 16th nomination and they have a total of four Grammy Awards on their mantle already.

The group stated that it would be a great honour for them if they walked away with their fifth Grammy Award next year. The Grammy Awards will be held in February next year.
