GALLERY: Vagrants in Randburg

RANDBURG CBD – Residents complain that vagrants contribute to crimes and the degrading of properties.

Residents often complained that vagrants and squatters who were occupying open spaces often leave filthy trash degrading properties in the suburbs and causing crime.

Vagrants take over 

On 27 January the residents of Windsor East complained about the vagrants who were located along Beatrice Street. It was established that they sleep outside the shop in summer through the rain and in winter through the blistering cold.

Vagrants arrested during a security clean-up 

On 29 January, about 56 vagrants were arrested in Kya Sand, during the clean-up operation conducted by Douglasdale Police and Night Guard Security Company.

Plans to upgrade and restore amenities 

Ward 117 Councillor Tim Truluck highlighted on 24 February that, in Delta Park some of the main, robust challenges in the ward were the increasing numbers of homeless people in the open areas.

Looming squatters 

The undeveloped space on the corner of Jacaranda Avenue and Hornbill Road came to light and was a cause for concern as residents spotted a few vagrants moving to the area at Meadowhurst on 10 March.

Vagrants won’t move 

On 17 June vagrants at June Street in Randburg CBD were sleeping on the pavement since last year as it was stated by the deputy head of Vuleka SSB High School Mike Hood.

According to Hood, the number of vagrants sleeping on the ground was worrying as it was escalating.

Suspects arrested during a joint operation 

On 15 July Randburg Police arrested two suspects after conducting a joint operation with JMPD and CSS Security Company. Suspects were arrested on the corner of Spruce and Cider streets in Bryanston among the vagrants who were searched.

Vagrants take over Mahogany Street and Malibongwe Drive 

In North Riding on 28 August, residents complained that the problem of vagrants was a social crisis that should be tackled.

Residents insisted that illegal traders, vagrants and jobseekers with suitcases, pots and old mattresses, were loitering along Mahogany Street and Malibongwe Drive.

Old Cartique premises causes problems for residents 

On 2 November, residents from Malanshof were up in arms over an empty stand that belonged to Cartique car dealership. Despite complaints that the property was devaluating their homes, concerns were also raised that it did not look appealing and was attracting vagrants.
