RIVERBEND – Residents complain about leaking sewage that is spreading into the Pampoenspruit and Klein Juskei River.

Residents noticed a huge amount of sewage spilling into Pampoenspruit and Klein Juskei River on 22 November.

The sewage water has been spreading throughout the area since it was detected.

Chairperson of Three River Resident’s Association Charmaine Zambetti said that residents who stay close to the open space reported the matter to them as soon as they noticed that is was getting worse.

“We have been engaging with Joburg Water about the matter and requested that they come to sort out the matter as soon as possible,” said Zambetti.

Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane said that according to the Level Service Agreement, Joburg Water has 48 hours to deal with the matter.

“We have requested that Joburg Water conduct an investigation in order to address the severity of the leakage and which steps to take to solve the issue,” Mafokwane said.

He also said that in the instance of this nature, his main concerns are after the area has been inspected that it is important that the sewerage pipes are sealed to halt further damage and leakage, remove the damage done in the area and to make sure that the water is treated with chemicals to return it to its original state.

“The more residents report matters to their ward councillors and resident associations, the faster a matter is addressed and ultimately, solved. I applaud residents’ involvement in looking after the environment and their dedication in situations of this matter,” Councillor Mafokwane said.
