Business owner worries about accidents on Conrad Drive

BLAIRGOWRIE – A request has been made for robot speed cameras on Conrad Drive.

Business owner Mark Roe has been concerned about the intersections on Conrad Drive in Blairgowrie where accidents often happen.

Roe has owned a business in Blairgowrie for 29 years and has seen every kind of car accident on Conrad Drive. He said that he had seen people getting knocked by cars, cars crashing into each other and trucks flipping over.

Corner Blairgowrie Drive and Conrad Drive and corner Hillcrest and Conrad drives have been a major problem over the years. The road is a 60 km/h zone but motorists drive extremely fast and usually go past a red robot.

Roe said that the speeding car situation has also been a problem and bad for business. “The accidents here are frightening and customers are scared to park right in front of the store because cars are always speeding here,” said Roe. He also added that it is very risky when cars back out of the parking lot because everyone is always impatient and that is when accidents happen.

The business owner has suggested that a speed camera should be placed on both intersections because that seems to work for most intersections that have them.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “Applications for a robot speed camera have to be sent to Gerald Ngubeni, JMPD chief superintendent for the speed camera unit.” He added that investigations will be done before the camera is placed. Ngubeni commented and said that once he gets an official request he will then forward it to the Johannesburg Road Agencies where a number of investigations will be done on the intersections before the application is approved.
