Sewage leak woes

BLAIRGOWRIE – An unattended sewage leak in Blairgowrie is still creating an uproar with a local business.

A local businessman who complained that raw sewage water had been leaking on to the road in front of his business for more than two months is still furious.

Business owner John Georgiou said Joburg Water has still not attended to the leak on the corner of Blairgowrie Drive and Selkirk Avenue.

Georgiou said he is upset about the poor service from Joburg Water and feels frustrated.

Manager of the affected business, Jaco Pretorius, is disgusted that the issue has not been resolved yet.

Joburg Water spokesperson David Sibiya has still not responded to questions regarding the issue.

“The smell is unbearable and has an influence on our customer basis. Clients do not want to park outside due to the smell,” complained Georgiou.

He said another problem caused by the smell is that the business is not able to open any windows.

The businessman said the continuous use of the air conditioner causes the business to not be able to save on electricity.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter said he received photos from the complainant on 16 November.

“It seems as if the leak comes from a private property. I will request my office to get Enviro Health to investigate further,”said Potter.

He further reminded the residents that the best way to log water and sewage-related faults is to email customerservice@jwater.co.za or phone 011 688 1699.

Councillor Potter concluded that long-outstanding matters need to be brought to his attention for further interventions and that a reference number is needed once doing so.
