Councillor warns about water meter installations

RANDPARK – Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl advises residents to be aware during the installation of new water meters.

Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl said residents should take precautions during the Randpark Water pipe replacement project and ensure installed water meters is set on 00:00 once installed.

Van Zijl said she has met with numerous residents who have complained that this has not been the case.

She said residents should take a photograph as soon as the meter has been placed on the pavement even if it has not been connected yet.

“Keep regular readings and preferably a photo of the current and new meter readings. This is important if evidence is required,” said Van Zijl.

She added Joburg Water should give warning a day before the new meters will be activated.

“I may sound paranoiac regarding the meter readings before the connection has been made but, most of the account problems are difficult to solve without supporting evidence of the meter readings,” said van Zijl

She said residents must be aware as it is difficult to solve connection problems once the contractor has left.

Van Zijl said all matters must be reported as soon as there is something that is unsatisfactory.

“Some problems residents should look out for is unrestored driveways, top soil, plants or lawn that has been removed, rubble or litter that has been left behind, dangerous holes left open or cement heaped around the perimeter,” said Van Zijl.

She concluded by advising residents to also install a stopcock on their side of the property.

“If a plumber cannot turn off the present meter during installation, have this done on the day when the new meters are connected – while the water is turned off in any case,”said van Zijl.
