Illegal dumping sight agitates Bordeaux residents

RANDBURG – Eskom and City Power fail to show up at an inspection of their property.

Community members in Bordeaux North are complaining about illegal dumping at City Power Delta Substation, on the corner of View and Republic roads.

Resident Robyn Muller said that the problem has been going on for two years. Dumping trucks dump mounds of rubble which also poses a security risk.

“Some parts are high and any perpetrator could hide behind the rubble,” said Muller.

She added that when she comes home she always has to be vigilant and make sure no one is hiding there.

Muller lives right across the illegal dumping sight on View Road and said that the rubble causes rats.

“Residents have requested to put up a gate around the area but it will cost them R450 000. The property belongs to Eskom and City of Johannesburg, yet no one is taking action and the residents must face it,” Muller added.

An inspection was conducted on 28 October by Pikitup and JMPD.

City of Johannesburg Region (Citizen Relationship Urban Management) CRUM Ward 102 Urban Inspector Sibusiso Mavimbela communicated with Muller via email and said the two main stakeholders did not show up at the inspection.

Mavimbela confirmed that no one showed up from City Power but he received a call from Eskom on 28 October when he was already on site.

They apologised and explained that they would not make it as managers did not approve the request or issued a signed authorisation to attend. Operational supervisor of illegal dumping for Pikitup Randburg Lucky Baloyi said, “Pikitup has been working and using their resources to attend to the illegal dumping of building rubble at Bordeaux North. Pikitup is only responsible for removing illegal dumping if it is on an open municipal space like sidewalks and open land.”

It was then decided at the site inspection meeting that Pikitup will clean the current rubble, but in the near future Eskom and City Power must take responsibility.

“Failure of attendance from Eskom and City Power to attend to the issues that are concerning the community livelihood is a concern,” said Mavimbela.
