Girl Guides South Africa empowers young women

NORTH RIDING – Girl Guides South Africa has a number of programmes that build fundamental qualities in young women.

There are requirements for being a girl scout, and issues associated with being a girl scout, that most people are not aware of. The perception that the sole role of a girl scout is to sell brownies at door steps could not be further from the truth.

Girl Guides South Africa has several training sessions across the country as well as workshops at their headquarters in North Riding.

Girl Guides South Africa empowers girls and women to reach their full potential through a dynamic programme to become the future leaders in their communities.

Girl Guides South Africa communication and marketing committee board member Hilary White said that through Girl Guides South Africa, the girls gain leadership qualities, understand real life issues and have fun through camping and hiking activities. Through service projects they learn how to be independent young women.

White added that any girl from the age of four to 30 can be a girl guide. “Girls who want to be a girl guide should call our offices where they will be directed to the nearest unit of guide leaders for assistance,” she said.

Once a girl agrees to the organisation’s promise and laws, she will be welcomed as a member.

Girl Guides South Africa also aims to provide a programme that incorporates a number of interesting leisure experiences such as canoeing, hiking adventures and camping outdoors.

These activities aim to build a young women’s individual character based on the values expressed in the Girl Guides promise and laws.
