Concerns over planned Kya Sand protest

KYA SAND – Residents and business owners are warned about an up-coming protest in the Kya Sand area.

Concerns have been raised about a planned march by residents of Pipeline and Msawawa informal settlements on 12 October.

It is understood that residents will gather at Riverbend and Agnes roads at 9am.

However, there is no official confirmation as to whether this is a legal march or not.

According to Ward 96 councillor Mafokwane Matome, “The protest will start in Msawawa, Plot 15, and end somewhere in Kya Sand. Please take precaution as there are no guaranties that the protest will be peaceful throughout. If you absolutely don’t have to be in the area please avoid the area.”

Kya Sand community leaders said the protest seeks to highlight their dislike of the proposed new demarcations of the wards – from Ward 96 to Ward 103. They said they also need clarity about how community funds are being spent.

They also added that they want to be eligible to move into the soon-to-be-built RDP houses, on the Lion Park land in Nooitgedacht.

It is understood that the community will be marching all the way up to Witkoppen Road and possibly further where they will hand a memorandum to the housing operations manager of the area.

Douglasdale Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan said, “We are aware of the protest and it will be policed by Public Order Police and Douglasdale SAPS members.”

The comprehensive details for the protest are still unclear.

Details: Douglasdale Police, 011 699 1300.
