MULTIMEDIA: Basement 8 band to open for Mi Casa

RANDPARK RIDGE – Basement 8 comprises musicians from Rand Park High School.

A new band formed by Rand Park High School pupils is making waves wherever they go. Basement 8 has six members who say they are dedicated to the music they make as a band.

The band will open for Mi Casa at St John’s College on 10 October, after winning the St John’s Battle of the Bands competition earlier this year.

The band was formed in February when the members competed in the St Mary’s Last Band Standing competition. “We were so surprised when we were announced as the winners at the St Mary’s Last Band Standing, we just did not expect it at all, as we were the underdogs,” said Lihle Dhlamini (16), who is one of the lead vocals for the band. She pointed out that the band’s members are able to play different instruments, with most being self-taught musicians.

Dhlamini described Basement 8’s sound as a mixture of different sounds and include a little bit of a variety of genres. “We have a free-spirited vibe and we are aiming at sounding professional as we take the band very seriously,” she added.

Dhlamini pointed out that they called themselves Basement 8 because they practice in the basement at Randpark Ridge High School and added that they put in two days of practice a week. Basement 8 members are planning on recording their E P at the end of the year as it was one of the prizes they won at the St John’s Battle of the Bands competition.

“We hope to get more gigs to play at so that we can get our band’s name out there, but we are very excited to open for Mi Casa – it will be the biggest gig we have ever played at,” she said.

Basement 8 comprises Creflo van Rooyen (18) Richard Kaldenberg (16) Emile Nikel (18) Ile Lee (18) Timothy Langa (14) Lihle Dhlamini (16) as band members.
