MULTIMEDIA: Weekend of women’s football

MALANSHOF – KZN touring teams play a weekend full of women's soccer at the Randburg Football Club.

A weekend jam-packed with women’s and girls’ soccer saw the Kwa-Zulu Natal provincial teams play the Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) district teams on 4 October at Randburg Football Club that hosted the friendly games.

The RCLFA teams consisted of players from Randburg Football Club, St Stithians Girls’ College (Crusaders), Panorama Football Club and FC Real (Allen Glen High School) to mention a few.

According to the RCFLA website, it is an association that “promotes, advances, administers, co-ordinates and generally encourages the game of football in Rand Central.” The area development programme for girls encourages the growth of girls’ and women’s soccer in the area.

The group of women all went to support our country’s women’s football team Banyana Banyana at their game versus Equatorial Guinea at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on 3 October.

The final day saw KZN and RCLFA play their hearts out in scorching heat. KZN U14 beat RCLFA U13s 6–1; KZN U16 played and lost to RCLFA U15s 6–1.

Listen to KZN U16 coach Nolwazi Nkabinde talk about the game.

The final game between KZN U19 and RCLFA U19s ended in a 6–2 loss for KZN.

Theo Buttress, coach of the RCLFA U16 district team said, “It has been a great weekend to promote female football. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we observe that as well by playing in our pink kit.”
