Gerty Botha turns 100
JUKSKEI PARK – Gerty Botha celebrates her 100th birthday with a letter from President Jacob Zuma, at Summerfield Park Retirement Village.
Gerty Botha celebrated her 100th birthday on 30 September.
Botha is a resident at Summerfield Park Retirement Village, which is one of the Methodist Homes.
The landmark birthday turned into a day of festivity at the home, and all residents as well as Botha’s friends and family arrived to celebrate the occasion on the sunny day.
Thirty-one of Botha’s family members attended – including her daughter Gwen Bradley, who gave an emotional speech honouring her mother.
Nonhlanhla Mthimkhulu, director of Social Work Advisory Services in the Department of Social Development, read a letter from President Jacob Zuma congratulating Botha on her longevitiy.
In his letter, the President sent his well-wishes and stated, “Our senior citizens are the foundation of our heritage, the rock that keeps our families and communities together. While I am unable to be with you on the occasion, I firmly believe that this special day will evoke many cherished memories, happiness and fulfillment.”
Botha has been in the care of Methodist Homes since 2001.
“She has a fantastic personality and is loved by all staff members,” noted Carl Volbrecht, manager of Summerfield Park.
“She never complains and loves eating fruit.”
Volbrecht called the milestone a “fantastic achievement.”
He also thanked the catering manager at Summerfield Park, Elizabeth Mpshe and her staff for making the day very special.
