Robbery in Randburg rises by 17.8 per cent

KENSINGTON B – 608 drug-related crimes were reported in the Randburg SAPS precinct.

Robberies at residential premises in the Randburg SAPS precinct increased by 17.8 per cent in the 2014/15 financial year.

This was revealed from the latest crime statistics released by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Piyega on 29 September.

Although there were no arson incidents reported, incidents of malicious damage to property increased by 18.1 per cent. The statistics further revealed that only nine murder incidents were reported.

Burglary at non-residential premises increased by 4.5 per cent and decreased by 2.4 per cent in residential premises. Total sexual offences significantly dropped by 43.3 per cent.

A total of 608 drug-related crimes were reported in the Randburg SAPS precinct, and had increased by 23.1 per cent compared to the previous financial year.

In Douglasdale SAPS precinct most crimes saw a decrease compared to the statistics of the previous years. Murder dropped by 14.3 per cent and attempted murder by 33.3 per cent.

Burglary in residential premises dropped by 10.9 per cent and 644 incidents of this crime were reported.

Theft out of motor vehicles increased by 8.6 per cent with 933 crimes reported in this financial year alone.

Meanwhile in Linden SAPS precinct theft out of motor vehicle remained a serious concern. This crime had increased by 21.1 per cent. Although there is a significant drop in other crimes compared to the previous year, burglary in residential premises increased by 20.8 per cent with 116 cases reported.

The Honeydew SAPS precinct reported a drop in murder by 18.6 per cent while sexual offences increased by 25.9 percent compared to the previous financial year.

The station saw a 12 per cent increase in robbery at residential premises and a 15.7 per cent decrease at non-residential premises.

Theft out of motor vehicle had increased by 3.1 percent in the Honeydew SAPS precinct.

Gauteng Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Andy Mashaile insisted that police strategy must be relevant to the problem. “We need to find the problem and provide the solution,” concluded Mashaile.
