Residents are fed up over loud noise

FONTAINEBLEAU – Residents are fed up by the noise that allegedly emanates from Africa Shisanyama Restaurant and Pub.

Residents in Fontainebleau are outraged by the loud music that allegedly comes from a recently opened restaurant and pub, Afrika Shisanyama, in Sternport Centre on the corner of 5th Avenue and Rabie Street.

“This whole weekend the noise was very loud from Thursday until Monday 3am,” said a resident who does not want to be named for fear of victimisation.

Michael (not his real name) said that he made several complaints to the Linden Police Station, but the noise was just kept at a minimum level for a short period and then back to its loudest.

“They also fight on the road when they come from this place. One Sunday morning when we walked out of the main gate, there was blood everywhere on the driveway, road and going towards the shop,” Michael further explained.

Another resident complained that the area was peaceful before the restaurant and pub started operating.

“The high volume of noise affects the community residing in the flats and the houses around the area,” said Maureen (not her real name)

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said the noise level experienced by residents is unacceptable.

“All property owners need to be cognisant of their neighbouring community. This matter has been escalated to the City of Joburg Environmental Health Department and I am hopeful that their efforts will ensure that property owners comply,” he explained.

He further said the Department of Environmental Health should be on standby to visit the premise during the late evening when the noise was most disturbing.

The pub manager Christopher Igwilo denied the music from the pub was loud.

He said they tried to keep the music at lowest level and they were planning to soundproof the establishment to ensure that the music does not affect residents.

“Even Linden Police officers come here for a drink, if there is loud music they would have reproached us,” he concluded.

City of Joburg Region B acting operational manager at the Department of Environmental Health Happy Nkanyana said an investigation was conducted. “We have always found them playing soft music and they were served with statutory notices,” said Nkanyana. He further explained that the pub owner was also advised to apply for entertainment licence which he failed to do.
