UPDATE: Sewage leak repaired

WELTEVREDENPARK - A serious sewage leak is receiving repairs after a long wait.

A damaged sewage pipe underneath the N1 bypass at the Beyers Naudé Drive on-ramp has been repaired. The leak was running into the Klein Jukskei. Workers were still on site on 18 September reinforcing the repairs.

The leak was reported on 15 June by Ward 126 councilor, Mike Tonkin, and the Riverwel Resident’s Association (RWRA). On 28 August, Tonkin was already concerned at the length of time it had taken to repair the pipes. “It would have been a maintenance expenditure if they had caught it in time but now it will have to be a capital expenditure as they’ll need to replace the whole pipe,” he said.

By 18 September, the pipe had been replaced and the process of reinforcing it had begun. Neville Burnett, a committee member of RWRA, however, showed concern about another leak that he suspects may also contain sewage. Burnett, who took particular interest in the sewage leak, was also frustrated by the length of time the repairs had taken. He stated, “I’m glad to see it’s finally being completed but I’m not too happy with how long it has taken.”
