BLAIRGOWRIE - Handbags are sold to raise money for charity and to spread the message of ubuntu.

Hand bags were used to spread messages of hope and the spirit of ubuntu across the community.

Women’s hand bags were collected by the students at Lisof Design Academy in Blairgowrie and sold to raise funds for the victims of abuse and the local disadvantaged communities.

Some of the handbags were donated by caring residents across Randburg and students of Lisof Design Academy in Blairgowrie on 29 August.

Named The Haute Bag Project, the charity event took place at the academy’s campus on 29 August and was organised and hosted by a group of third year students at the academy.

Lisof marketing lecturer Liora Kats, described the event as a unique experience that aims to create awareness and spread a message of inspiration across the communities of Randburg “while enabling students to put academy theory into practice”.

She said the highlight of the event was the construction of a three dimensional giant hand bag inspired by an international organisation called The Handbag.

“This work of art is the creation of handbags together forming one giant handbag. It encourages the spirit of Ubuntu, the essence of all SA communities,” said Kats.

Residents were also given a platform to spread their messages on different social issues including fight against rape in SA and self-defence classes were also taught.

Nomzamo Mokaba, one of the third year student organizers said the Haute Bag Project is a cross-disciplinary, experiential learning and charity event aimed at shedding light on various social issues within the community like abuse, sports and crime education.

“The third year marketing and project management students are the organisers of the event. And everything accumulated on the 29 will go to the identified needy beneficiaries,” said Mokaba.

Two residents and participants Gregory Havenga and Ben Coetzee dressed like women.

Havenga said, “We are here to try to spread the message about women empowerment including giving them the respect they deserve.”
