UPDATE: Police brutality condemned

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale CPF and the DA comment on the viral brutal attack.

Following the attack on two men by two members of the Douglasdale Police station, many entities have condemned the attack.

According to the video, the two men were attacked on 18 August at 3.37am at the Pineslopes Centre.

The one victim was allegedly bodily searched with brute force, including his genital area, by the officers. The victim in question sustained numerous injuries to multiple parts of his body.

Douglasdale CPF chairperson Advocate Jean Berdou commented on the Douglasdale CPF Facebook page, “The matter is being thoroughly investigated, and we appeal for calm while the process unfolds. We ask the public to be vigilant and to realise that the vast majority of our police officers are law abiding and hardworking, and put their lives on line every day for the protection of our community members.”

DA Gauteng released a statement pertaining to the incident in which they said, “This behaviour on the part of the police is unacceptable and the officers in question must be arrested, charged and suspended immediately.” The statement continued, “The National Commissioner and Provincial Commissioners need to take a much stronger stance on the issue and make it clear to all SAPS members that such brutal actions will not be tolerated.

“Every time an incident of this nature is exposed, the credibility of the SAPS suffers and the relationship between the SAPS and the community is broken.”

Berdou further stated, “[Douglasdale CPF] is monitoring the investigation… in order to ensure that the processes are followed fully and where accountability is required, it falls so that we assure the public that anyone who serves the community as a police officer is as much accountable of the law as any citizen.”

Meanwhile, spokesperson of Douglasdale Police Station Warrant Officer Balan Muthan stated that a case has been opened against the two officers. He further added that the case has been sent to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
