Eco-friendly plans for Sandton traffic

JOBURG – Motorists travelling to Sandton in October should expect some major changes.

Travelling into and out of Sandton will certainly be a different experience between 1 to 31 October as Sandton is the business hub of Joburg, many people travel to and from Sandton on a daily basis.

During South Africa’s Transport Month Eco-Mobility World Festival 2015, the busy streets of the ‘richest square mile in Africa’ will aim to be car-free.

According to the Eco-Mobility World Festive 2015 website, certain streets in Sandton’s CBD will be closed off to usual traffic and preference will be given to public transport, walking and cycling.

This month-long event seeks to hopefully introduce motorists to eco-friendly alternative modes of transport.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Mpho Parks Tau said, “A comprehensive transport master plan will be in place to manage the process of closing off sections of Sandton. There will be inevitable disruptions to traffic patterns during October and this will cause some ‘discomfort’ but will not lead to ‘dysfunctionality’.”

“As you will note in the detailed presentation plan by our transport officials, we are taking extraordinary steps to mitigate the impact on both residents and the business community. At the same time we want to demonstrate that a decongested Sandton will bring major benefits for them,” explained Mayor Tau.

He added that the community will notice the dedicated 5km cycling and walking path and bridge across the M1 between Sandton and Alexandra.

This is to cater for the up to 10 000 people who travel between Sandton and Alexandra daily.
