RANDBURG – Johannesburg residents are encouraged to make a difference in the environment by participating in the annual massive clean-up of the Braamfontein Spruit.

Johannesburg residents will soon team up and get their hands dirty in an effort to clean the Braamfontein Spruit on 19 September.

The clean-up has been organised by local resident and community associations working closely with City Parks and Zoo, ADT and Pikitup.

Spruit Day organiser Ian Tumiel addressed the media and other stakeholders in Bryanston on 30 July about the impending clean-up.

During the briefing, Tumiel said residents are encouraged to join hands during Spruit Day 2015 to help keep the environment clean. “This will provide the ideal opportunity for residents who live along the Spruit to get involved in a combined clean-up effort,” he said.

The 25km-long river is said to attract hundreds of cyclist and walkers from various communities.

Two teams will start in Bryanston and end at the Emmarentia Dam.

City Parks will also provide 100 trees which will be planted on the day.

Tumiel highlighted that the place has become a dumping ground for waste.

Last year, the Spruit Day attracted 500 residents, and Tumiel said they hope to attract more residents.

Pikitup’s operations manager Melvin Jacobie said he encourages residents in Melville, Westdene, Emmarentia and Victory Park to join in the clean-up.

“We will be hands-on to remove and collect refuse and litter on the day and it will be good for the community to get involved,” Jacobie said.

“It is always great for the community to meet us half way – and also they will be showing us that they care about the environment,” he said.

The clean-up will start at 9am and will carry on until 2pm.
