Bird club gets a feather in its cap

PRESIDENT RIDGE – BirdLife President Ridge receives a certificate for turning 20 years old.

BirdLife President Ridge, a bird club located at President Ridge Bird Sanctuary, celebrated its 20th birthday with a luncheon at the Indaba Hotel, Lanseria, on 26 July. About 80 members and guests enjoyed the event with spot prizes, gifts on all the tables and a tog bag – made to carry binoculars, bird books and accessories, for each guest. In his welcome, chairperson John Human said that Gill Hardingham, a former member of the Sandton Bird Club and Wits Bird Club, played a major role in the establishment of the club in 1995.

“It is a feather in our cap that we are the only club to have started and still actively maintain a bird sanctuary,” he said. “I believe that our involvement in the bird sanctuary has contributed to the continued strength and longevity of a small club. We have something to do together and we are proud of the President Ridge Bird Sanctuary.” Then, Human, along with three other past club chairpersons, received a 20-year certificate from BirdLife South Africa chairperson Roger Wanless.
