GALLERY and VIDEO: Delta Dance doesn’t disappoint

DELTA PARK – Delta Dance draws an audience for the first time.

It is one thing to practice a routine with a dog in the quiet privacy of one’s home. However, as contestants of Delta Dance discovered on 12 July, suddenly having an audience can be a bit nerve-wracking. This is the first year that the event has drawn members of the public who have shown an interest in the sport and the dogs did not disappoint.

Even though one or two dogs experienced intermittent stage fright, they managed to execute their performances with enthusiasm. Contestant Yvonne Berger said, “It is fun for the dogs. It gives them mental stimulation and it is a good way to bond.” Berger’s point was proven as both her border collies, Jazmin and Stirling, will advance to novice and intermediate levels respectively.

Sjaan Kuun, proudly the oldest competitor, agreed. “It does not have to be difficult. While you are cooking or whatever, you can ask your dog to weave through your legs and then go back to what you were doing. It is not a difficult sport.” Berger added, “You do not have to go anywhere and you do not need anything – you do it at home. It is easy to make time.”

International judge Minna Yrjana was very happy with the standard of dancing. “There was nothing that made me cringe. It was a very good day.” At the prize-giving she added, “The innovation routines impressed me the most today. Next time I want to see them in the beginner’s class.”

The next stage of the competition will be held on Friday 17 July in arena B at WODAC, and the SA Champs on Saturday 18 July in arena A at WODAC.
