GALLERY: Zandspruit continues with illegal connections

ZANDSPRUIT – City Power workers face attacks when illegal connections are removed.

The ongoing problem of illegal electricity connections in the Zandspruit Informal Settlement is a continuous battle for City Power.

Spokesperson Sol Masolo said, “City Power has been removing illegal connections in the area on many occasions, and many times as soon as we have removed them, some people in the area re-connect them.”

Masolo also expressed that the City Power team has been harassed. “[It happens where] the people in the area have attacked our teams when we go into the area to remove illegal connections. Only last month our team was attacked in the area while removing these connections,” said Masolo.

JMPD escorts the City Power team into the area every three to six months, according to JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar. “The last time we visited the area, we removed over 500 illegal connections and cable. It is an ongoing operation with JMPD and City Power,” he added.

City Power, according to Masolo, is preparing itself to revisit the area and is currently coordinating with JMPD.

To report any illegal connections and theft of electricity or electrical infrastructure can be reported to City’s Power’s risk management control centre on 011 490 755.
