GALLERY: Winter market unites community

Magic shows, braais, crafts, business stalls, and most importantly, community interaction were the order of the day at the Kenbrink Resident’s Association ( KRA) first Winter Market on 20 June. The winter’s day was full of sunshine as residents brought their whole family including their pets, for a fun, relaxing day out. Kensington B’s public park was transformed into a market extravaganza by the KRA for the event.

“I am incredibly pleased with the great turnout. It builds a wonderful sense of community and we will definitely have a Spring Market following this,” said the association’s public relations officer Arlene Leggat.

Leggat added that the market also gave community members the opportunity to showcase what they do and also taught young children how to be responsible with money.

Before the event, community members were invited to set up any kind of stall that they would like, to exhibit at the market. Following the invitation, sisters Yasmika and Samara Reddy saw this as an invitation to set up a stall at the market to earn some extra pocket money. “I supported them, as it was a great opportunity for them to earn their own money and also test their entrepreneurial skills,” explained their father Reshen Reddy.

Community members could also ride in a custom ’57 Chevy while being able to enjoy some food, cake and tea. The children were entertained by a magician, jumping castles and were able to have fun on the park swings and merry-go-round. Eldorado Park Second Band marched through the streets of Kensington B spreading the joy of the Winter Market. “It was just simply a great experience being able to see people smile at us while we marched past them,” explained band member Jafta Petersen.

“I think this (winter market) was a brilliant idea. I really hope that it grows. This atmosphere is just amazing and so relaxing at the same time,” commented Kensington B resident, Tsitsi Chiwanza.

Another pleased resident, Darren Archibald said that he was pleased with the good turnout and believes that there should be more community events so that people can get to know their community better.
