Refilwe needs you

LANSERIA – Teachers are currently being trained in a course set out by the University of Pretoria.

The Refilwe Community Project in Lanseria is seeking help. The non-governmental organisation asks for financial contributions, food, teacher courses, teaching equipment, stationery, chairs, tables, playground equipment and indoor play equipment for their ongoing Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiative, established in 2010.

The initiative involves 15 crèches. According to Refilwe’s donor relations manager Corné Engelbrecht, the centre wanted to get involved with the surrounding community crèches and help them as much as they could.

Through this project, the organisation hopes to help the women who run these crèches by providing them with skills, resources and confidence, which is needed in order to teach children in their care. The organisation also hopes to ensure that the children are given the best foundation for their future.

Talking about the logistics of running this project, Engelbrecht said, “We have a ‘mother’ school which is run off the Refilwe property which aims to be the model school for the community ECD centres, where the ladies can come and gain ideas and inspiration. It is also the base from which English lessons for the teachers have been run as well as first aid.”

Refilwe has two women working out of this school who go into the community schools with the themes and activities for teachers. They also offer ongoing advice.

The teachers are currently being trained in a course set out by the University of Pretoria which aims to have them certified on a level of ECD training by the end of the year.
