Power surge woes begin

BROMHOF – Resident loses R5 000 worth of appliances.

You had better not leave your electrical appliances on, when experiencing load shedding.

Bromhof resident Linda Evans recently made that mistake and it cost her R5 000.

During a recent spell of load shedding, Evans left her blow dryer on.

When electricity was restored, there was a power surge and her blow dryer allegedly “exploded”, melting the objects around it.

“When the power came back on, it [the blow dryer] started on its own and the heat from the arcing flash melted all the other plastic appliances,” Evans said.

She calculated that the electrical appliances that were destroyed were worth R5 000.

She warned residents not to make the same mistake.

Questions were sent to City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele as to what residents can do to prevent power surges, and what they can do after losing appliances due to power surges.
