Taxis impounded at violence-rigged road

RANDBURG – Dozens of taxis have been impounded to reduce violence between two taxi associations.

The Gauteng Traffic Police Department has started an on-going initiative to reduce taxi violence between Alexandra Township and Randburg on Bram Fischer Drive.

According to the department’s spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo, officials will be out along that route until the conflict between taxi associations has been resolved.

“The provincial task team will be situated at those targeted locations until the matter has been resolved. The taxis have been impounded and it is usually up to the officer on the reasons a vehicle will be impounded.”

On 25 March, 35 taxis were impounded on Bram Fischer Drive at the time of publishing, with more still expected to be impounded during the course of the day.
