GALLERY: ‘Randburg Sports Complex is in a shocking state’

RANDBURG – Take pride in the Randburg Sports Complex, says a concerned resident.

Resident Tersia Klopper, who lives next to the Randburg Sports Complex, said she has been fighting a losing battle with the City Council about the maintenance of the complex.

“The complex is in a shocking state and has been like this for the last couple of years,” Klopper said.

She takes walks through the sports complex on a daily basis and she notices what’s going on in and around the complex.

“The first big problem is a leaking pipe that has been like that since November last year. It looks like its leaking at the water meter and I don’t want to think of the thousands of litres of water that have been wasted,” complained the resident.

“The second issue is the rubbish bags that are just standing around and they are left behind by Pikitup for two weeks until it’s finally collected.”

She added that the uncut grass and trees are also a problem as it makes the complex look unmaintained.

“Another concern of mine is a tree that fell over onto a fence about two months ago. The tree was removed from the fence, which it had already damaged, but the tree was just dumped next to the fence and left there. Exposed wires at lamp poles and open electrical boxes are also some of the issues that are left unattended and they could cause a death if someone had to touch the open power box,” continued a frustrated Klopper.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter explained that the issues were not raised with him.

“The issues will be raised with the Sports and Recreation Department as the public spaces are the responsibility of the City and the area inside each sporting code is the responsibility of that sporting code.”

External communications officer at Johannesburg Water Eleanor Mavimbela indicated that the entity will fix the leak when she said, “I have logged a call with the call centre for a team to be dispatched to the site and do repairs.”

Comment from City Parks about the untrimmed trees and grass inside the Randburg Sports Complex is still awaited.
