Central Gauteng Provincial Championships 2015

NORTHGATE – Figure skating is a way to express yourself, say Central Gauteng Provincial skaters.

The Central Gauteng Provincial Championships took place on 28 – 1 March at the Northgate Ice Rink.

According to the chairman of the Central Gauteng Championships Wayne Mccoll the competition is a tough one.

“It is a provincial competition, so all club members are skating against each other. From this competition skaters can be selected to represent Gauteng in the Nationals,” McColl explained.

Jacqueline Pedersen, mother of three skating daughters, said skating in her family started when her eldest daughter Zindzi Pedersen joined it.

”It also helps with balance and co-ordination,” said Zindzi

The reason Zindizi started skating is because she said, “I am a bit nerdy, so the ice gives me a way of expressing myself. It is also a very different sport it’s got jumps and skills. It is my passion.”

Five-year-old Aqua Pedsersen, the youngest skater in the family, started skating because she wanted to skate because of, Frozen, the movie so she skated in a Elisa-dress look alike.

Katlego Mbatha, who is part of the Academy skating group, aims to one day also performs solo.

”It is a very poised and interesting sport, you can express yourself through dance on the ice and it is not common,”said Mbatha.

Her mum Tshidi Mbatha agrees that skating also helps a lot with posture.

All music is instrumental, except from Junior Level upwards. Skaters are penalised if their music contains any lyrics.
