Construction disaster at Boskruin Mall

Eight people have been injured after a wall collapsed on 28 February at the Summerfield Shopping Centre in Boskruin.

Eight people were injured after a construction wall collapsed at the Summerfield Shopping Mall in Boskruin, on 28 February.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinman,”six of the men are seriously injured.”

Two men sustained moderate injuries.

The construction company responsible for the site is Gothic Construction.

Health and safety manager Gerhard Potgieter said, “An investigation into the cause of the wall collapsing will start on 2 March. The findings from the investigation will be submitted to Gothic Construction management, the client and the Department of Labour by 6 March.”

He added that safety is taken very seriously at Gothic Construction.

“It is never our intention to have our guys hurt on site; we will make sure that we get to the bottom of finding how it happened. Gothic Construction ensured that the workers would receive the best medical treatment possible, and will continue to do so as the well-being of our workers is a priority for us,” said Potgieter.

The workers were transported to Olivedale Clinic and Milpark Hospital by various emergency medical services.

Some were discharged after being treated on 28 February.

Two of the workers, who were admitted to hospital, are expected to be discharged on 2 March.

Two workers are in trauma ICU and will be operated on for the injuries that they sustained.

Work in the area of the incident was ordered to stop and specific instructions left to close off the area to prevent further injuries and disturbance of the scene.

Gothic Construction extends their sympathies to the injured workers and their families.
