Plans to upgrade and restore amenities

DELTA PARK – Ward Councillor 117 Tim Truluck outlines different community projects that are planned for his Ward.

Some of the challenges that councillors face over and over again, include an increasing number of homeless people in their wards.

It seems that vagrants use any open land or abandoned building as their homes.

Some collect recyclable items while others have been suspected to be selling drugs.

Ward 117 Councillor Tim Truluck started a petition, to get the community involved and to find a solution to this ever-growing problem among the communities.

Truluck explains, “We have received about 2 000 signatures already. The aim of the petition is to force government to do something to solve this problem. Vagrants move around, from this area to another.”

Truluck said all the shelters that could accommodate homeless people seem to be full around Rosebank.

He added, “The petition will also help to protect our areas – especially the Bird Sanctuary, which is a wild life site. This is where vagrants have found a home. It is not acceptable.”

Other projects that Truluck is working on include plans to upgrade a parking area in Delta Park that will allow people who do park runs on Saturdays, sufficient space to park.

Truluck added that City Parks has dedicated a parking area to be used by park runners, in order to reduce traffic inconveniences.

They are also preparing for the mountain bike route that will involve Delta Park Environmental Centre and Blairgowrie community.

“There is going to be a Delta Dash fundraising event on 18 April and sadly, concerts are no longer allowed at the Delta Park. But picnics, walks and runs are allowed,” said Truluck.

Resident manager of Delta Environmental Centre Geoff Lockwood concurred with Truluck on issues relating to Delta Park.

Lockwood expressed his concern over the decline on the level of service that is supposed to be provided by City Parks.

“We do not want Delta Park to lose its unique nature and the reason why people love it so much, compared to other big parks in Joburg. We have limited parking space at Delta Park. That is why Delta Park School parking space was made available to park runners. People go there, park and pay for parking fees. In that way, they are donating the needed funds to the school.”
