JNW Chess holds its first tournament

BLAIRGOWRIE – Joburg North-West Chess opens the season with a check mate.

Joburg North West Chess (JWNC) hosted their first rapid chess tournament for the year on 31 January at the Blairgowrie Primary School.

The games were 60 minutes long – 30 minutes for each player.

Although these games are not registered they are a great kick-off to the new year.

“What’s interesting is the development section. These are for first-time players in lower grades that wish to start playing chess more seriously,” said media spokesperson Barnard Beukman of JWN.

According to Beukman, all children are welcome to join –including adults – to connect with the chess club and community.

JNWC also hosts leagues at schools with different age categories in each section.

Through individual participation one can go on to compete in the provisional trials and from there you can gain access to provisional teams.

While playing, you can accumulate a rating for the national Protea teams.
