Pikitup makes plans for illegal dumping

KYA SAND – There is hope for the Pipeline Informal Settlement's illegal dumping problem.

Pikitup held a meeting on 26 January with relevant business owners and key players.

The aim of the meeting was for Pikitup (PIU) to present a way forward to eradicate the illegal dumpsite in the Pipeline Informal Settlement, Kya Sands [see previous article https://bit.ly/15O8TnW].

Patrick Galloway, director at Pikitup, announced the short- and long-terms plans that they have for the area to the members of the community.

First, he noted that the City of Johannesburg acknowledges that Pipeline community has been experiencing problems with illegal dumping in the area.

“The first approach is to remove the current dumping within the area. Pikitup will utilise machinery and trucks to clean up the area initially and then increase cleaning frequency,” said Galloway.

Short-term goals included:

· Communicating with the community at large to refrain from illegal dumping and inform them of consequences if caught.

· JMPD will confiscate vehicles which are caught dumping.

· Communal skips will be placed within the informal settlement to reduce dumping of domestic waste.

· Signage will be placed throughout the area.

Long-term goals included some of the short term goals:

· Procuring a builder crusher machine.

· JMPD will patrol the area and confiscate vehicles which are still dumping

· Implementation of Jozi@ Work will take place and illegal dumping will be one of the work packages that will be outsourced to the community.

Also in attendance was Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane who commended Pikitup for their plan of helping the community.

”I thank you for getting us a solution that we just didn’t have before, I will be able to communicate the plan to them once it is finalised,” commented Mafokwane.
