Community takes action against illegal dumpsite

KYA SANDS – “This land can be used for anything but this dumping,” says Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane

Community members and leaders of the Kya Sands Informal Settlement met with Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane on 26 January to discuss community issues. The main issue was the illegal dumping that is taking up their space.

“I want to convert the place to a vegetable garden that can help us in the community, start a car wash if the taxi rank is made up properly,”said Samuel Mahlatji, community leader of Kya Sands Informal Settlement.

Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane says that if this land is cleaned up it will also help create employment for the community of Kya Sand Informal Settlement as they can use their hands to make up a vegetable garden and run a car wash.

“I want this land to be used for anything but this illegal dumping. We need to reclaim this land and not allow this dumping.”

The councillor urged the community to reclaim these open spaces for better use before the situation becomes turntable.

“Good deeds can be implemented only if people start thinking differently” remarked Mafokwane

“It is very, very important that it gets cleaned up, why should I buy from the supermarket, tomatoes when I can use my own hands and make some money to help,” said community member Thabo Mothibi.

Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane calls upon the Kya Sands Community the think-tankers, entrepreneurs, smart ones to start proposing ways to protect all open spaces around Kya Sands against illegal dumping.
